Discussion and possible action regarding an additional extraordinary rate increase for recycling processing costs incurred by Republic Services.
Recommendation
Authorize the City Manager to implement the requested extraordinary processing fee of 32 cents per month per resident.
Description/History
The City of Mansfield, Texas, entered an agreement with Republic Services to provide solid waste and recycling services on behalf of and for the City of Mansfield, Texas. The Contract with Republic expires on September 30, 2023. Contractually, Republic is allowed to petition the City Council for extraordinary cost increases for recycling services because of the current macroeconomics within the recycling industry.
Justification
Under the terms of the contract, Republic has the ability to petition the City Council to increase what is referred to as a processing fee for the increase in costs associated with handling recyclable materials. The recycling market has changed significantly over past couple of years and Republic is requesting a fee increase that pay for the additional costs in processing the recyclable materials.
City Council may elect to increase the requested extraordinary processing fee of 32 cents per month or City Council may elect to not increase the extraordinary processing fee of 32 cents per month.
