Description/History

In an effort to continue to maintain existing tree irrigation and plan for future tree plantings and irrigation, the Public Grounds Department and the Planning Department are working together to implement a Tree Maintenance/Planting and Irrigation Program.  Due to lower staff levels and vacant positions on the Public Grounds crew, the staff is struggling to keep up with maintaining existing trees and had concerns about adding new trees due to the staff time it takes to monitor and maintain new trees.  By working with the Planning Department to create a Median Tree Planting & Irrigation Program funded by the Tree Mitigation Fund, staff will be able to contract out tree irrigation on existing median trees as well as future median tree plantings.  This contract labor will focus on performing audits, inspections and repairs to all median trees.  The contract will also allow Public Grounds staff to focus on other maintenance areas including flower bed irrigation, chemical application, pest control application, and plant and tree maintenance in all other public areas including all public buildings, medians, and parks.  The contract will provide the opportunity to continue to beautify the City through future median tree plantings without putting a burden on staff or the General Fund.

Justification

Due to limited Public Grounds staff and plans to continue with beautification efforts by adding trees and irrigation to existing non-landscaped medians, this contract will implement and maintain existing and future median tree irrigation systems.

Funding Source
