Description/History
The regional SWAT Working Group submitted a grant application to the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) funded under the FY2015 HSGP to purchase tactical robots for SWAT teams. Total funding awarded was $80,000 with no match required. Four teams selected by the SWAT Working Group leadership include: City of Cleburne, City of Mansfield, City of Rockwall and Parker County. The purpose of the FY2015 HSGP is to support state and local efforts to prevent terrorism and other catastrophic events and to prepare the Nation for the threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk to the security of the United States. The Mansfield Police Department will be a Sub-recipient and will Purchase SWAT Equipment with this Grant.
Justification
The SHSP assists state, Tribal and local preparedness activities that address high-priority preparedness gaps across all core capabilities where a nexus to terrorism exists. All supported investments are based on capability targets and gaps identified during the Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment process, and assessed in the State Preparedness Report.
Should the need arise, the Mansfield Police Department does not have access to a SWAT Tactical Robot. This grant will allow for the purchase of such equipment that will be readily available, not only for the MPD, but will also be available to assist local law enforcement agencies to protect citizens, residents, and visitors.
