Title
Resolution - A Resolution to Consider Support for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's Local Park Grant for the Development of Walnut Creek Linear Park, Phase II
Requested Action
Consider supporting the application to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's Local Park Grant Program for the Development of Walnut Creek Linear Park, Phase II.
Recommendation
Support the application to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's Local Park Grant Program for the Development of Walnut Creek Linear Park, Phase II.
Description/History
The 2009 Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Spaces Master plan included a spine trail phasing and prioritization plan. The first priority on this plan was trail segment "I" which is 2.75 miles from Oliver Nature Park through Philip Thompson to Loyd Park on Joe Pool Lake. This segment is also referred to as Walnut Creek Linear Park, Phase II. MPFDC allocated funds for the Walnut Creek Linear Park Phase II in the FY2014/2015 budget.
This grant provides 50% matching grant funds to municipalities, counties, MUDs and other local units of government with populations less than 500,000 to acquire and develop parkland or to renovate existing public recreation areas up to $400,000.
Justification
Trails were identified in the 2009 adopted Parks Master Plan as a high priority park facility within the City. Construction of phase II of the Linear Park will assist the MPFDC in meeting this need of the community and promote wellness, recreation and an alternative transportation method.
MPFDC unanimously approved this item at their regular meeting on August 21. Staff will be available to answer any questions.
