Requested Action

City council consider the attached ordinance.

Description/History

From time to time, the Building Official must deem a building and/or structure unsafe for human occupation. It is necessary to have an ordinance in place that allows the Building Official or the Code Compliance Department to abate violations when the owner or occupant of the property is unwilling or unable to do so.

Justification

The proposed ordinance will provide minimum standards for the continued use and occupancy of all buildings and structures. It establishes a practical method for abating violations of the Building, Electric, Fire, Residential, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Maintenance Codes adopted by the City, whereby buildings, as defined in the ordinance, endanger the life, limb, health, morals, property, safety or welfare of the general public or their occupants and may be required to be repaired, vacated, demolished, removed or secured.
