Description/History

In September 2014, Crown Castle contacted staff with the desire to expand the existing telecommunications equipment compound located in McKnight Park within the City of Mansfield in order to accommodate Verizon Wireless. Verizon proposes a 14’x24’ space to be able to place all the outdoor equipment with all the correct clearance area needed. They have also proposed a chain link fence on top of the CMU retaining wall to be able to gain more space in the lease area. The idea is to build a terrace type landing which will not exceed or encumber the drainage area. Staff has requested that the area be screened with masonry walls and vegetation to soften the facility and make it aesthetically pleasing to the surrounding area while complying with the current screening ordinance. The MPFDC voted 7 - 0 to approve the proposal at their December 10th meeting.

Justification

Staff recommends that the expansion will not adversely affect the park, provide additional monthly revenue to the MPFDC and provided an opportunity to soften and provide aesthetic screening for the site.  Crown Castle has agreed to the screening and will also provide additional monthly rent as provided in the proposed amendment proposal presented to the Board.
