Title
Resolution - A Resolution Adopting and Authorizing the use of the Construction Manager at Risk Delivery Method for the Construction of Fire Station 1; Delegating Authority to the City Manager or his Designee; Finding that the Meeting at which this Resolution is Passed is Open to the Public as Required by Law; and Declaring an Effective Date
Requested Action
Approval and authorization for the CMAR delivery method for the construction of Fire Station 1.
Recommendation
Staff recommends approval.
Description/History
The relocation, design, and construction of Fire Station 1 is a priority project for Historic Downtown. Currently, Fire Station 1 occupies approximately 1.2 acres off Main Street. The relocation will still allow services to be provided to the same service area while also creating an opportunity for a remarkable addition to Main Street in Historic Downtown. The new location of the station will be just south of Broad Street on South Walnut Creek Drive. City Council previously authorized staff to engage with Martinez Architects to ensure the new design of the station would complement the design of other historic structures in the district while meeting the needs of the officers at the station to provide essential, noteworthy services to citizens.
Justification
The CMAR delivery method has previously been used by the City for projects. For example, the CMAR delivery method is being utilized for the new animal care offices, and the service center expansion. The CMAR method allows the construction manager to work closely with the design team (in this case, Martinez Architects) to ensure that the design and construction of the building are efficient and feasible.
