Description/History
For several years, the City Council has operated with a sub-committee appointed to study public memorials within the City. The sub-committee has reviewed topics such as memorial benches and trees, veterans’ memorials, locations of public memorials, and criteria for inclusion on public memorials. During the course of their discussions, the sub-committee identified the need for a memorial plaza to honor first responders who have fallen in the line of duty. City staff developed conceptual images and reviewed the draft concepts with the sub-committee on May 4, May 25, June 15 and July 12, 2016.
Staff from the Police, Fire and Parks and Recreation Departments met to discuss design elements and proposed criteria for inclusion on the memorial. Modifications to both were made following feedback from Police and Fire Department representatives, as well as review by the City Attorney. Funding for the project is being provided out of the City’s General Fund. The estimated project cost for design and construction of the memorial is $105,000.
Justification
The sub-committee will present the recommendation for Council to discuss and consider funding the design and construction of a memorial plaza at Mansfield City Hall.
