Description/History
In May 2008, City Council approved the Mansfield Park Facilities Development Corporation to begin design of a skate park on the city-owned vacant property at 1008 E. Broad Street and turn it into a much-needed skate park facility. The City Council approved the idea with the understanding that the Council will approve the final design. The improvements will include skate park amenities including small ramps, rails, fencing, and a shade structure. The school district has given verbal permission to use adjacent school parking lots for parking. This property is an ideal location for the skate park for many reasons. It is easily visible from Broad Street which assists with safety and it is next to schools and neighborhoods and it has accessible sidewalks so skaters may ride their boards to the location.
Since June, 2008, MPFDC has received input from the public and City Council for the design and has determined that Design/Build would be the best method of delivery of this project. Requests for Qualification (RFQ) were advertised in February, 2009, to select a Design/Build team. The RFQ packets were received in April and in May. The MPFDC selected and awarded Part I of the Design/Build contract to AUI Contractors, Inc. and Spohn Ranch skate park designers to create a conceptual design.
