Description/History
The 30-inch sewer line that is located just north of Walnut Creek and east of North Street collapsed following the rains on Oct. 31 resulting in the banks of a drainage swell that feeds into Walnut Creek giving way. We estimate the extended rains, and soil saturation undermined the support of the sewer main causing the break. Crews located the break during a routine inspection of the sewer interceptor, thus enabling them to mitigate any potential hazards or nuisances from the spill.
Justification
The critical nature of the break with waste water flowing into that section of Walnut Creek required immediate action and remediation. Upon finding the break crews immediately began emergency pumping and transporting. During the emergency, pumping a bypass plan was developed and enacted that included the use of four large centrifugal pumps to move the waste water from a location upstream of the break to a location downstream using temporary piping. Venus Construction is in place and has begun the job of permanently replacing a 120’ section of the interceptor.
