Title

Ordinance - Public Hearing and First Reading of an Ordinance Changing the Speed Limit on the SH 360 Frontage Roads to 50 MPH

Requested Action

Adoption of the Ordinance

Recommendation

Approval of the speed limit change on the SH 360 Frontage Roads.

Description/History

During the SH 360 Design Build Project construction crews will be working on and in the vicinity of the existing frontage roads.  The existing speed limit on the frontage roads through Mansfield is 60 MPH.  To increase safety for the workers and the traveling public and to have the ability to design a traffic control plan that more closely matches the 40 MPH design speed of the existing frontage roads, TxDOT has requested the posted speed limit through the City be reduced by 10 MPH to 50 MPH.

The State will be responsible for the items of work (signs, etc.) to accomplish this request.  All the items of work will be carried out and completed by the State with no cost to the City.

At the completion of the project the existing speed limit will be reinstated if justified by a speed study.

TxDOT has requested this ordinance be expedited, as the project detour construction is expected to begin in mid-December.

Justification

TxDOT is requesting this speed limit reduction to increase safety for the construction workers and traveling public while SH 360 is under construction.

The Public Works Director will be in attendance at the meeting to answer Council’s questions.
