Description/History
In May 2008, City Council gave approval for the Mansfield Park Facilities Development Corporation to begin to design of a skate park on the city-owned, vacant property located at 1008 E. Broad Street and develop it into a much-needed skate park facility. The City Council approved the idea with the understanding that the Council will approve the final design. The improvements will include skate park amenities including small ramps, rails, fencing, and a shade structure. The school district has given verbal permission to use adjacent school parking lots for parking. This property is an ideal location for the skate park for many reasons: it is easily visible from Broad Street which assists with safety; it is next to schools and neighborhoods; and it has accessible sidewalks so skaters may ride their boards to the location.
TIME LINE:
· June 2008, a public meeting was held to receive input, ideas and suggestions for the skate park design and construction materials
· August 2008, staff presented three schematic designs to the public for additional input.
· September 2008, schematic design approved by MPFDC and City Council to allow staff to move the project forward
· February 2009 MPFDC and City Council determined that Design/Build would be the best delivery method; Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was advertised to select a design/build team
· April/May, 2009, the RFQ packets were received; MPFDC selected and awarded Part I of the Design/Build Contract to AUI Contractors and Spohn Ranch skate park designers.
