Requested Action
Approve the Resolution calling the May 10, 2014 General Election for the City of Mansfield.
Recommendation
City staff recommends the City Council order the General Election to be held on May 10, 2014 and Runoff election on June 21, 2014 (if necessary) by approving the resolution outlining the election procedures.
Description/History
Section 41.001 of the Texas Election Code specifies that the second Saturday in May shall be "uniform election date." The City of Mansfield Charter Section 4.01 "Nominations and Eleciton" (a), Regular Elections, states "The Regular City elections will be held annually on the first Saturday in May unless specifically prescribed by State Law. The Council shall order the election and designate the place for holding such an election." The Charter states "The Council Members shall be elected by place at large under the general provisions provided by Article IV of this Charter for three (3) year terms. The three (3) year terms shall be staggered so that two (2) and not more than three (3) members be elected each year."
Terms expire in May 2014 for the following Council places:
Place 6 - Wendy Burgess
Place 7 - Larry Broseh
The City Secretary's Office is distributing candidate packets upon request.
Justification
The procedure will be in accordance with the City Charter and State Law.
Funding Source
All election costs are budgeted in the City Council account 01-8806-11-01.
