Description/History
Each year staff compiles a list of recommended improvements for the existing parks in the City’s park system.
September - The MPFDC approved $265,000 for existing park improvements in the FY 2015-2016 budget. The proposed list for park improvements includes recreation equipment replacement, sports field renovations, Julian Feild playground and ADA, Magnolia Street building renovations, Chandler Park and Sports Complex shade, McKnight batting cage concrete, and signage replacement at McKnight Park East.
November - The existing parks improvements list was approved by the Board
December - No Update
January - The Julian Feild Park improvements have been designed, advertised, and will open for bid on January 28th. The list of improvements include construction of a new ADA walkway from the parking lot to the playground, a small ADA picnic area, new outdoor furnishings, and new playground equipment and surfacing. The Magnolia shop has been painted and updated inside, with exterior items being quoted now. Shade quotes have been received for Chandler Park and the Sports Complex. Staff is reviewing the needs of each facility. The McKnight batting cage concrete will be scheduled in late February or early March. Signage replacement at McKnight will be installed upon completion of the entry drive realignment with the Fieldhouse construction.
February - The bid for construction of improvements at Julian Feild Park is on the agenda for approval under New Business. The exterior improvements for the Magnolia shop are underway with prep for painting and providing a masonry enhancement element. The new roll-up door has been installed. Staff has received the site appraisal. Discussion for quotes is underway for site concrete at the Sports Complex.
March - Staff has conducted a pre-construction meeting with all contractors involved in the Julian Feild Park improvements project. Scheduling and construction implementation was discussed. Demo of the existing site will start this month with the belief of a 60 calendar day completion. A list of improvements include construction of a new ADA walkway from the parking lot to the playground, a small ADA picnic area, new outdoor furnishings, and new playground equipment and surfacing. Improvements continue at the Magnolia Street Service center with new concrete pad for roll up door access and fencing.
April - Construction has begun on the Julian Feild site. The new ADA walkway and parking lot area have been poured. The playground retaining wall and new railing have been installed as well. Staff anticipates the new playground equipment installation to begin sometime in the next two weeks. A list of the total new improvements includes a new ADA walkway from the parking lot to the playground, a small ADA picnic area, new outdoor furnishings, adjustments to the existing parking lot, and new playground equipment and surfacing. This project was scheduled for 60 calendar days of completion starting on March 21, 2016. The Magnolia Street Parks Service Center improvements are 75% complete. A contractor has been scheduled to hardwire the baseball scoreboards. Furnishings for various parks have been ordered.
May - Construction of the Julian Feild playground improvements are almost complete. The new ADA walkway and parking lot area have been poured. The new playground retaining wall and safety railing have been installed, as well as the new playground equipment. Staff anticipates having the new furnishings and poured in place surfacing installed by next week, with the playground opening at the end of this month.
June - Julian Feild is complete. Staff is in the process of re-quoting shade structures for Chandler Park, as well as designing a concrete slab for a batting cage at McKnight Park East. Final fence improvements for the Magnolia Maintenance shop are underway with rock work to be scheduled by the end of FY2016.
July - The fabric shade structures quote for bleacher covers at Chandler Park has been received. The concrete quotes are underway for the Sports Complex entrance to baseball storage. Batting cage concrete for McKnight will be quoted and complete by the end of FY 2016.
August - The fabric shade structures have been ordered for Chandler Park. The concrete for the sports complex baseball storage has been contracted. The restroom building for the sports complex is scheduled to bid this month, with a Board update scheduled for next month.
September - Fabric shade structures for Chandler Park are in production. Installation will begin at the end of the month. Concrete for the Sports Complex baseball storage entry is under way and will be complete by the end of the month.
Justification
To continue to provide quality facilities throughout the park system the existing park improvements funding provides an ongoing update to the existing Parks in the system.
