Description/History

Since 1999, the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program has awarded more than 13,000 jurisdictions a total of $412 million in federal funds for the purchase of over one million vests.  BVP is a critical resource for state and local jurisdictions that saves lives.

Justification

Every officer employed by the City of Mansfield is issued and required to wear a bulletproof vest while on duty.  Bulletproof vests help absorb the impact and reduce the penetration to the body from firearm projectiles and small explosions.  Bulletproof vest deteriorate over a period of time with the maximum shelf life of 5 years.  The police department inventories every vest worn and replaces vests on a rotation schedule.  The department will purchase for replacement a total of 43 vests in fiscal year 2018 through 2019 for an approximate total of $34,000.  If awarded this grant the police department may be reimbursed approximately $17,000.
