Description/History

Each year staff compiles a list of recommended improvements for the existing parks in the City’s park system.

 

October 2017 - The MPFDC approved $250,000 for existing park improvements in the FY 2017-2018 budget. The proposed list for park improvements includes the replacement of wood panels on the bridge and boardwalk at Oliver Nature Park, the replacement of benches at Clayton Chandler Park, the demolition of a storage building at Hardy Allmon Soccer Complex, adding cabinets and replacing restroom fixtures at the Mansfield Activities Center, playground improvements at various parks, installing namesake and educational signage at various parks, and replacing various grills, benches, picnic tables and bleachers throughout the park system.

 

November 2017 - Staff has met with another company for board replacements at Oliver Nature Park. Staff is exploring options on the board replacements. Park signage for Walnut Creek Trail and replacement for Don Barg Park have been ordered. Other park naming signage has been designed (Chandler and Skinner) and is in review and waiting on approval.

 

January 2018 - Park replacement signage is being installed along the trail and at Barg Park. Meetings on the MAC improvements have been ongoing with quotes requested for the restroom upgrades. Exercise equipment is being installed at Katherine Rose Memorial Park as part of the playground improvements line item. Staff is currently obtaining quotes to repair the subsurface material under the rubber at James McKnight Park East. Replacement of the decking at Oliver Nature Park is being evaluated and quotes for board replacements are in progress.

 

February 2018 - Park educational replacement signage is installed along the Walnut Creek Linear Trail and at Barg Park. Meetings on the MAC improvements have been ongoing with quotes received and in review for the restroom upgrades. Exercise equipment has been installed at Katherine Rose Memorial Park and are in daily use. Staff has obtained quotes to repair the subsurface material under the rubber at James McKnight Park East and currently we are waiting on the weather to break to facilitate the repairs.  Replacement of the decking at Oliver Nature Park is being evaluated and quotes for board replacements are in progress.

 

March 2018 - Restroom upgrades at the Mansfield Activities Center are scheduled to be completed by the end of May. Replacement decking for Oliver Nature Park is being procured through Fort Worth Lumber. Installation will be on an as-needed basis by the staff at Oliver Nature Park. The second order of park amenity replacements (benches, tables, trash cans) has been placed. The playground surfacing repair is complete at James McKnight Park East. Options for playground surface repairs at Katherine Rose Memorial Park are being evaluated by staff. Repairs are scheduled to be completed this spring.

 

April 2018 - Restroom upgrades at the Mansfield Activities Center are scheduled to be completed by the end of May. Replacement decking for Oliver Nature Park is procured through Fort Worth Lumber. Installation will be on an as-needed basis by the staff at Oliver Nature Park. Playground surface repairs at Katherine Rose Memorial Park are contracted and will be complete in May. The additional two namesake signs for the Chandler and Skinner facilities have been designed and are being reviewed by the City Manager’s Office.

 

May 2018 - Restroom upgrades at the Mansfield Activities Center are underway with new sinks, mirrors, hand dryers and flush valves installed. Partitions will be installed by the end of May. Replacement decking for Oliver Nature Park is procured through Fort Worth Lumber. Installation will be on an as-needed basis by the staff at Oliver Nature Park. Playground surface repairs at Katherine Rose Memorial Park are contracted and will be complete in May. The two additional namesake signs for the Chandler and Skinner facilities have been designed and are being reviewed by the City Manager’s Office.

 

June 2018 - Restroom upgrades at the Mansfield Activities Center were completed in May. Playground surfacing repairs were completed at Katherine Rose Memorial Park during the first week in June. Replacement decking at Oliver Nature Park will be installed on an as-needed basis by the City staff. The two additional namesake signs for the Chandler and Skinner facilities have been designed and are being reviewed by the City Manager’s Office.

 

July 2018 - Namesake signage approval has not been released by the City Manager’s office. The Hardy Allmon shop demolition will be scheduled once staff receives the purchase order. Staff is reviewing additional items for park amenities and improvements to implement during this fiscal year due to savings on some of the original projects in the FY18 budget.

 

August 2018 - Namesake signage approval has not been released by the City Manager’s office. The Hardy Allmon shop demolition is complete. Staff has submitted additional items for park amenities and improvements to implement during this fiscal year due to savings on some of the original projects in the FY18 budget, including additional signage, picnic tables, benches, park lighting upgrades, bleachers, grill replacements, baseball hardware, pond fountain aerator, and mutt mitt stations.

 

September 2018 - All additional items have been ordered or installed as part of the 2018 Existing Parks improvement budget. The Mansfield Activities Center storage and cabinets will be carried forward on the 2019 Existing Parks improvement list.

 

Justification

To continue providing quality facilities throughout the park and recreation system with ongoing updates and improvements.
