Description/History

The South Main Street Improvements (Broad Street to Hunt Street) project has been designed and is currently being publicly bid.  This project is providing for back-in angled parking within the limits of the project.  In an effort to maximize the number of public parking spaces provided and enhance safety with the project, several driveways along South Main St. were eliminated.  Most of these properties have additional driveways either on South Main St. or on adjacent cross streets.  However, the property at 315 South Main St. currently has only one driveway on South Main Street.  This is the property’s only access to a public street.

During the design phase, staff met with the current property owner of 315 South Main St. and proposed that, to provide access to this property, an access easement be created on property that the City currently owns at 301 South Main St. (MEDC Office).  The property owner agreed that the access easement was an acceptable solution.  The current project will provide for the construction of a shared driveway to be located within the permanent access easement and provide access to the property.

Justification

The driveway removal and permanent access easement will help to maximize the number of public parking spaces and create a more permanent configuration on South Main Street.  Reducing the number of driveway connections will also reduce conflict points.

The Director of Public Works will be in attendance at the meeting to answer Council’s questions.
