Requested Action

Staff requests approval by City Council for theCity Manager and Fire Chief to make application to the 2018 Homeland security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Recommendation

Staff recommends approval.

Description/History

The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

Justification

The Mansfield Fire rescue recently decommissioned our light and air vehicle due to mechanical failure of the air compressor. The compressor was unable to be repaired due to the age of the unit. The Fire Department is also in need of new pumpers. Our fleet is aging, call volume is increasing, and maintenance costs are rising. By purchasing a Rescue Pumper, we would have the ability to replace an engine that was purchased in 2004 and accomplish the mission of the decommissioned air truck. Purchasing an ambulance would allow us to replace a 2009 model vehicle. The new vehicles will adhere to new safety and emission standards. Making our fleet more advanced, safer for our personnel, and reducing our carbon footprint. If awarded the grant funds the city would save $810,000 on the purchase of these vehicles.
