Description/History
The 2009 Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Master Plan included a spine trail phasing and prioritization plan. This trail segment “M” which is 2.25 miles from McKnight Park East through the shops at Broad over to Carlin Road then continuing on to Elmer Oliver Nature Park which is a continuation of the existing Walnut Creek Linear Park trail system. Kimley Horn and Associates Inc., was retained in fall of 2019 to formulate the conceptual trail plan and analyze the street adjacency on Cannon Drive and Matlock Road. Construction documents for section 3A, the Shops at Broad Section, were completed in the spring of 2021. In the winter of 2021-2022, Kimley-Horn was retained for the design deliverables and bidding of section 3B, the Cannon Dr to Elmer Oliver Nature Park Section.

January 2022 - Construction of section 3A was completed at the end of November. Staff is currently working with Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. to prepare their design proposal for trail section 3B (Cannon Road to Elmer Oliver Nature Park). Design is anticipated to take six months once awarded. The pathway will utilize and improve existing routes and structures already in place and that were identified within the analysis created in October 2021.

February 2022 - On February 14th, City Council awarded Kimley Horn the design consultant contract for the trail section 3B. While contracts are being finalized, staff is currently working with them reviewing the survey data and formalizing the design schedule for the scope of work.

May 2022 - On March 7th, staff and members from Kimley-Horn held a kick-off design meeting to discuss the scope of work and project scheduling.
