Katherine Rose Memorial Park Playground Project Update

Description/History
An all-inclusive expanded playground is being proposed as a replacement for the Boundless playground put in service in 2010 located in Katherine Rose Memorial Park. The Rose Park property, originally a pecan orchard, was purchased in 1992 by the Mansfield Park Facilities Development Corporation with proceeds from the half cent sales tax. The park was developed in part with grant funds from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This 25.46 acre park opened in 1996 and was named for the wife of the previous land owner. One of the most used facilities in this park is the current accessible playground.

A new modern playground will serve this park well for a number of reasons. First, the park is centrally located in the City of Mansfield and will serve the greatest number of residents daily. This park also contains a ½ mile, lighted, concrete walking/biking trail that serves as a major trail head connection to the Walnut Creek Linear Park. The linear park trails bring hundreds of visitors to the park each day. Second, this park hosts many community wide events such as Pecan Festival, Fall Festival, and Pet Mania. Pecan Festival each September hosts up to 10,000 visitors in a single day. Lastly, this park is located on Walnut Creek Drive, a highly-traveled street in the City.

This park is very visible to current residents and visitors who may not be aware of the entire Parks and Recreation system in Mansfield. Other amenities in this park include four covered pavilions with picnic tables, one large covered event pavilion, 10 picnic tables with grills, six lighted half-court basketball courts, two lighted volleyball courts, eight horseshoe pits, restroom facilities. A Keep Mansfield Beautiful Project, “Katherine’s Rose Garden” is located at the front of the park and serves as the back drop for photographs and special events.

The current playground has over served it...
