Requested Action
Consider adoption of the Ordinance modifying the school zone limits for Lake Ridge High School and changing the speed limits on N. Day Miar Road and East Seeton Road.
Recommendation
The Public Works Staff recommends approval of the Ordinance
Description/History
The Public Works Department along with the Mansfield Independent School District Police Department review school zone locations annually to determine if existing zones are still valid or if new school zones are needed. In addition, speed limits in the vicinity of the school zone changes are also investigated. Based upon recent information and coordination with MISD PD and Mansfield PD the following changes are recommended to Chapter 73 of the Traffic Code of Mansfield.
School Zone Change
· Extend the existing school zone on N. Day Miar Road/E. Seeton Road that serves Lake Ridge High School by an additional 1,000 feet to the south to encompass all three driveways of the high school and the Day Miar Road/Seeton Road intersection.
Speed Limit Changes
· Change the speed limit on N. Day Miar Road from East Broad Street to East Seeton Road from 45 MPH to 40 MPH.
· Change the speed limit on East Seeton Road from N. Day Miar Road to National Parkway from 45 MPH to 40 MPH.
Justification
The extension of Day Miar Road/Seeton Road school zone that serves Lake Ridge High School will allow the 3 school driveways and the Day Miar Road/Seeton Road intersection to be encompassed into the school zone. The 20 MPH school zone speed limit will improve safety in the vicinity of the school.
