Title
Historic Preservation Officer’s Report for July 2021

Desciption/History
The purpose of this report is to provide the Commission with information on preservation topics that were discussed at or have arisen since the last HPO report. These items are informational and do not require discussion or action by the Commission.

A. Demolition of a Historic Resource at 916 Noah Street, Britton Community

A demolition permit for the house at 916 Noah Street in the Britton Community is currently under review. The house was built circa 1935 and is a wood-sided, center gabled bungalow. The house is not a designated landmark. The house does not represent a unique style of architecture and has been modified over time.

The house is listed on the Historic Resources Survey update as a Medium priority resource. Medium priority resources usually have less architectural and physical integrity than High priority or Selected Medium priority properties. They are almost always characterized by alterations or deterioration of materials that removed, changed or obscured original design features, or by less significant associations with the historic context. They are not usually eligible for listing as an RTHL. If included in a National Register historic district, they are almost always considered contributing resources to the district.

This demolition is one of an increasing number of tear-downs in the Britton Community to accommodate new housing. With the loss of the Citizens Bank in 2019, there are few physical reminders of the Town of Britton left. Staff would like to schedule a discussion on possible ways to memorialize the Town Britton on a future agenda.
